Recently I spent an afternoon enjoying the game of of rock, paper, scissors with my grandson. Such a simple game to learn and yet it held our attention for hours. Found myself watching my grandson, at the young age of five, not frustrate over winning or losing, but understanding the process of logic. In these days of technology, truly a blessing to see joy on the face of a little boy because it makes sense that "paper covers rock" or "scissors cut paper". I came home with memories of his smile and more . . . which had me looking up the history of this game. In doing so, I learned that there are peace processes entitled same. Sure, it's simplistic . . . but keeping it simple can make a difference.

I have been away from the world of blogging for a bit. Longer than I thought actually!! I've changed the name of my personal blog and am going to be sharing some new things. Not sure if I'll keep up and post daily but I am hoping to share some of my new addictions (aka sweet tooth) to several art mediums new to me and my experience in the later part of 2009. I am still keeping my hands a bit muddy with clay projects but now I find myself washing paint brushes and picking up bits of fabric and thread off the floor. I've discovered that painting can be fun, messy, frustrating, challenging and quite satisfying. I've been messing about with painting on fabric and adding other mixed media. I have found mixed media collage to be fascinating and beautiful. I've been collecting a increasingly growing stack of books on this medium. See my Shelfari selections for some of the most recent books I've been reading and loving.
The two little pieces I've pictured here are my experiments with mixed media. They measure only 2 X 2 1/2" (not including the hangers). I began with a scrap of canvas and after some paint, magazine ephemera, rusty wire and beads . . . here's what I ended up with. Some tiny peace canvases.
I hope all of you can find time to satisfy your artistic sweet tooth. I am so fortunate to have a supportive partner who encourages me to have a go at whatever might artistic eye candy I might be drooling over. I hope this New Year brings peace and great art experiences and experimentation into your life.

shanti mala bracelet from moondogtreasures

shanti is the sanskrit word for peace.

A Japa mala, or mala, is a set of prayer beads popular in India and Tibet, commonly made from 108 beads. It is used to keep count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra.

It is traditional of Tibetan Buddhism to recite mantras 108 times. Therefore malas have 108 beads, or are also made smaller but are divided into 108 to come up with 27 and 54 bead malas.

Each time you end a round, you reach the stop bead on top. That helps you keep track of how many times you have gone around.

It's an interesting look at the peace sign and what it means, and what it can mean. They claim that the peace sign was originally drawn as a sad and hopeless person, and that is not the energy we need to be spreading by sharing the symbol. Instead they want to empower the "upside-down" version with the "arms" pointing upward.

I have really really been getting into peace signs lately. As soon as I saw this site, though, I had to take a second look at this symbol I was using....

I am scaling down in size on my clay projects for a while. Trying to make time to spend reading and also preparing for concerts at my school. These are small clay pendants/charms that were strung on jewelry wire with glass beads to catch the sunlight. I think these will look great in a sunny window in your home or office! I've even made some to hang from rear view mirrors. We all need reminders to be peace-filled especially in busy traffic!

I found this video on YouTube...it's good to see peace is alive...!!! Today is Human Rights day...you can't want peace without being concerned for human rights. I sometimes get pulled in so many directions , because there is so much that needs fixed , so much that needs attention and change , that it is hard to remained focused at times. I wish I could change it all and make it better, but I only can do , what I can do, and if we all just do what we can ,,,,it will add up to a lot changing..... PEACE~

"Holding on to HOPE"

Hope is a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life. Hope is the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best.

With the economy getting worse daily we must continue to hold on tight to hope. I have friends and family all going through some very very difficult times right now. They have lost homes, fighting to save homes, lost businesses, they have lost vehicles, jobs, and some are just hoping daily to still have their jobs. It's getting tougher. Of course my family lives mainly in Michigan, and the rest in California, two of the hardest hit states. West Virginia isn't feeling the effects as much yet...although it is beginning here too.

Do what you can this holiday season to help those that maybe be losing jobs, homes, etc.... if you can help with money for local charities, food for food pantrys, toys for Toys for Tots.

Hold on tight , lets keep Hoping!

Dona Nobis Pacem = Grant us Peace

Artists have a gift... and when I say artist, I mean anyone who creates , from the grandmother who knits socks for the grandchildren to the Picassos to the soap makers, potters, to the visions of photographers...if you create something you are an artist. And if you are an artist , you have the ability to create pieces that can reach out and make people think , and help bring about change in our world. We PeaceNiks have come together here, and other various online venues to do just that.

The peaceful energy I have seen coming from this group of artists has inspired me . I have watched many of you get inspired as well , and start making even more art for peace ... I am glad to be part of this movement. I think that as we grow we will spread out like roots into many different communities and each of us , as one, can make change for many.

I am hopeful that peace is on the horizon. Without getting too political here, I feel our country will be heading in a good direction soon. With our new President who offers us hope I think that peace could be a reality in our life time. Martin Luther King's dream just came true. Our dream for peace can come true to if we just keep believing in it and working towards it.

The Peace Globe project began in the fall of 2006 with a simple post from one blog, Mimi Writes. The post ignited a flame in the blogosphere. The flame became a passion. The passion became a movement. It amazingly traveled from blog to blog to blog across the globe. Bloggers wrote passionate articles on what peace means to them, along with the promise of three Latin words scribbled on a globe - Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) - branded with the integrity of their names or blog names. It was positively inspiring to watch. And it began to happen all over the world - from Singapore to China to Afghanistan to Brooklyn.
It was simple. And powerful.

Ok!!! Today is the day...I hope everyone is getting out and voting today. I hope the lines are short and if not the weather is nice. I hate to tell you about the short wait I will have, as I have none. I will drive a short 5 minutes from my house, walk in the door and sometimes they are even getting the paperwork ready for you before you walk in , because someone recognizes you before you come in. Then I will be handed my paperwork, walk to the booth, and vote. No lines at all! I wish it were so everywhere. Maybe we should all work on voter reforms for the next election.

I hope who you voted for wins this evening , and if not, then get involved and make sure that your congressmen represents you and what people in your state want. We need to get stronger than the lobbists!

One of my new found internet friends sent me something lovely a couple of weeks ago. It was a short video on YouTube....called the Beckoning of Lovely. Amy Rosental of Chicago started this wonderful project that you just must see to appreciate.

Got this idea a few weeks ago when I blogged about the awful "Peacekeepers" military dolls with the rifles in their hands. I thought " I need to make a doll for peace" . So here is my first attempt. It is my first in what I think I will call my "Peace Heroes" series. I think "Gandhi" will be sewn with a sewing machine...even though I am quite handicapped when it comes to useing it. I will post him later when he gets sewn up.

Can you practice 1000 acts of peace this year? You could if you would commit yourself to just three Acts of Peace each day!

Your act of peace can be anything.... Mine yesterday were ~

1) created a piece of peace art

2) shared recipes with a friend

3) called my cousin

You can write down your peace acts...or reflect on them at the end of the day... I find this similar to gratitude journaling... but it's different , whereas what you are grateful for, might not be the same as what you did to promote peace. I am officially starting my peace journal this evening.

"Let it go for Peace"

14 x 20 on scrap wood pieces...the bird is made of glass I found on a mountain top, it was old glass with a texture.

If you hang on to anger, disappointment, resentment, hate, what ifs, hurt feelings etc... then it can keep peace from your soul. This painting is about letting it all go. Release it and allow positive energy to flow~ It's about forgiving and moving on , could we forgive on a national level?

I am going to throw this out there...may shock some of you, but this is a big 'what if'. What if: After that terrible day of 9/11 , we as a nation , everyone, the ones that lost loved ones, to our nations' leaders....what if we forgave the men who attacked out nation? What if President Bush and our congress got together with the people of New York City, sent a collective "WE FORGIVE YOU " to the people that struck terror on us? What would have happened? Would that have caused people to looked upon our great country differently? Could we have change the world?

I always say the best way to teach my child is to lead by example, if I have someone do something bad to me, do I want him to see me seek revenge...or to forgive.

I recently read an article about some people affected by 9/11 that went to Afganistan after we attacked them as a cultural exchange...a peace mission to show we are all human. If I find it I will post a link...could find it just now. They did just that , they forgave.

"The PeaceKeepers"

I was at the store the other day and was appalled to find toys for children called "the peacekeepers" . They were not Gandhi, Jesus , Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, or John Lennon. They were military men dressed in all black and carrying an arsenal of weapons. Peacekeeping should not involve weapons. If people are peaceful because they are afraid , is that true peace? So here is my painting of my "peacekeepers". The ones I hope my son grows to know well , the ones I hope he aspires to be like someday .

This one of my first tiles that I made when I began this journey into the addicting world of working with clay! I'd like to think my work has evolved since then. Whether it has or not . . . . it is the journey that I am enjoying.
I hope this finds you all well at the end of the work week. I find something gratifying about being tired at the end of the day. Glad, however, that I have the weekend to recharge, reflect and re-energize myself for teaching next week.

I've learned so much over the years how peace truly starts within each and every one of us. The philosophy that I have learned and studied during my training to become a certified yoga teacher has truly been a blessing in helping me become a more balanced person.

How often do we see people mistreating each other with their harsh and most often unnecessary mean and hurtful words. This happens everywhere! This can happen in your home, at the workplace, and on the road, just to name a few instances. Often if we take a deep breath for a moment and think, we can avoid the possibility of hurting another soul and in our own way, help create a more peaceful environment! I like inspirational quotes a lot. Sometimes just reading them helps us to reflect for a moment.

I am a creative person by nature and enjoy all aspects of the creative process. This past year I have been consumed with an addiction to working with clay. I find I can relax and unwind as soon as I pop open a bag of clay and mold it into something beautiful. My hobbies certainly help me find peace from the hectic demands of the day.
